Module 4 - Assistive Technology for Computer Access Introduction Computers are used by millions of people in order to accomplish a variety of tasks in their daily lives. Such tasks include word processing, communicating, information gathering, shopping, entertainment activities, etc. Using a computer to accomplish these tasks is relatively simple for the general population; however, for individuals with disabilities, it can be a task met with difficulties. Without adaptations, certain aspects of the computer serve as barriers that prevent individuals with disabilities from accomplishing goals or tasks using the computer. AT can limit or remove these barriers allowing individuals with disabilities to operate the computer independently; thus, making the computer a powerful tool for the previously mentioned activities as well as obtaining and performing a job. Just as the general population, individuals with disabilities are constantly seeking technologies that will improve their ability to perform a variety of tasks. In order for practitioners to recommend adaptive technologies to consumers, they must first be aware of available options in addition to considerations for using these products. The previous module discussed different categories of AT. Since the computer can be a powerful tool for individuals with disabilities, this module will further discuss AT options for computer access including: AT options for imputing information into the computer and ways to access the computer output to help individuals with various disabilities to become more effective computer users. |
