Module 3 – Categories Of Assistive Technology

 Introduction

AT devices are often categorized into one of seven categories. Such categorization simplifies the accommodations process. Without these organization systems individuals making accommodations would have to sift through thousands of devices to accurately determine which is most appropriate for a particular user. For instance, someone with low vision or blindness may or may not also have hearing loss, therefore, selecting a device that adequately addresses their limitation (vision) is appropriate. However, if an individual possessed both disabilities, they may look at AT applications in both categories, or find an accommodation that serves both functions.

Thousands of technological devices can be classified as Assistive Technology (AT) (ATA, 2000). These instruments include input devices, such as large print keyboards, and sophisticated output devices, such as Braille embossers (printers). This module will focus on the seven categories of AT devices as well as the levels of technology in which AT devices are classified.
