CEU Requirements

What is a CEU?
The CEU (Continuing Education Unit) is a unit of measurement used throughout the United States by educational institutions to record participation in non-credit education programs.  One CEU is awarded for each “ten hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction.”  Guidelines for awarding CEU’s were developed by the State Coordination Committee for Continuing Education in 1978 as a part of a state plan for educational institutions for higher learning in Iowa.

How are CEU's used?
Recipients of CEU’s may use them as evidence of their active interest in continuing education, their active participation in such programs, and their subsequent life and career enrichment through increased knowledge.  Employers, in turn, may use the CEU as evidence of an employee’s performance.   It is also possible to preassess skills through the SkillSoft preassessment and evaluation tools.  Approved programs are accepted for relicensure by many licensing boards and professional organizations, check with your licensing office for more information.

How do you earn CEU's?
UI Learning & Development will award Continuing Education Units (CEU's) to UI employees who:

  • Successfully complete (a grade of 85% or higher) any of the SkillSoft courses that are available through UI Learning & Development.

  • Of these courses, 10 hours = 1 CEU

The estimated duration listed for each class is used in calculating the CEU’s.  On average, it takes 3 hours to complete a course, which is equal to 0.3 CEU’s.
