Module 5 – Assistive Technology Assessments

Introduction

As mentioned in Module 3, the categorization of AT products simplifies the process of accommodating an individual with a disability. This module discusses the process for assigning a device, assessment.

Assessments have many purposes including: identifying strengths, needs and areas of improvement, evaluation, or for determining eligibility for a particular program. Each of the aforementioned purposes are true in relation to Assistive Technology (AT) . However, the main objective of conducting an AT assessment is to ensure that the person's needs are addressed using the appropriate  technology. It is important that professionals providing AT services to persons with disabilities recognize the effect of this assessment process on the outcomes of the AT intervention. Although this module is not intended to prepare you as a formal AT evaluator, it will present general concepts and models related to the use of AT assessments that can certainly enhance the student's  awareness of the important of this topic.
