What do I install to make Elluminate work? You need to install Java runtime engine. It is free download from Sun Microsystems. You need speakers and a microphone connected to your system. One option is a USB headset like the Logitech brand. It has both a microphone and headphone speakers built together and gives you the best listening experience. It is essential that you setup your system in advance. There are several links on this site that allow you to setup your audio and test your system at anytime. Use the 30 minutes prior to class time to perform a final connection and setup of your audio. Elluminate makes the process easy as it guides you through the connection tests for listening and recording.
How do I access the Elluminate class before it meets? Classes are accessible 30 minutes prior to their start time. Use this time to connect to the class, test your audio settings and begin to interact within the class. Use the audio setup… command in Elluminate to begin the process. It is all automated for ease of use. A voice guides you as you adjust your record and listening levels. You will even hear yourself recorded so you can set the tone of your voice as it goes out to the participants and moderators in your class.
What do I enter into the password field on login? If there is no password required for entry into the class then you should leave the password field blank.
What are the first steps to opening an Elluminate class? When you select your link to the class you will be asked if you want to open, save or cancel. Select "open". Elluminate will continue to load.
How do I “talk” in-class? Only one person can talk at a time in the Elluminate system. There is a large talk button to toggle between speaking and listening. Click on the talk button once, talk, then when you are finished select the talk button again. If the button is unavailable it is because someone else is talking or has left the button on. Be patient, generally the class will be asked to raise their hands in Elluminate and then each person is asked by the moderator to talk.
Do I need a webcam to use Elluminate? A webcam is not required to use the Elluminate virtual classroom. The faculty will choose weather or not to use the webcam. Even if the webcam feature is to be used you will be able to view webcam images even though you may not have one connected to your system. However without a webcam you will not be able to transmit your video to the other participants.
How do I raise my hand in-class? There is small icon that is literally a raised hand which you select to show your moderator that you have raised your hand.
Can I lower my hand? Use the same small icon of a raised hand to raise and then lower your hand to the moderator.
What is direct messaging? While in Elluminate you can type a question into the direct messaging window and it will appear to whom it was sent to in the class. Note: all direct messages are seen by the session moderator.
Can I put up a visual (graphic file) to share with the class? Yes, you may add a graphic to the display using the tools that are provided to highlight and make graphics on the screen. The moderator can turn this feature on or off.
How do I view Elluminate recordings? If a recording was made of your event go to http://globalcampus.uiowa.edu then select recordings then the day your Elluminate session originated. Choose the session you wish to view from that days recorded events. Note: If your event was password protected you will need to use the same password to view the recording.
