Getting ready to use Elluminate Live!™
Elluminate is an online virtual classroom service. Elluminate software requires Sun Java to be installed on your machine as well as a working microphone and speakers (all hooked to a working sound card).
Note: If you are using a computer in your workplace or a public area you may need to consult with the computer support staff to have the software & microphone installed.
If you are familiar with the Elluminate system try these quick steps to getting started. If you are new skip these steps and read the instructions bellow (starting with "What you need to get started").
QUICK STEPS:(Steps 1 and 2 can be performed at any time)
Is Java installed? How do I check my audio? Follow the steps at the Prepare your computer link to setup your computer.
Where is my class? Go to globalcampus.uiowa.edu - find your session on the list for sessions for today and select it to start.Do I need a password? Only if your instructor specifies a password. Otherwise just enter your name to sign in at login.
What are these messages after I login? These are files loading before the program begins. When asked about a file during startup, for the eluminate software, select "save" or "open".

What you need to get started:
Elluminate software works on both Mac and PC. The requirements are the same. First, go to http://www.elluminate.com/support/ to check if you have the Sun Java installed on your machine. The site will tell you if have the required software installed on your computer. If you find you need to install Sun Java follow the instructions provided.
Elluminate virtual classroom allows participants to communicate using audio over the internet or voice over IP. A microphone is required to use this feature. We recommend a USB headset microphone. These are available for around $35 from most electronics/computer retailers.
Elluminate can also send web video via a web cam or digital video camera. Web cams are available from many computer retailers starting around $40. Not all courses use the video feature. Check with your instructor before investing in a web cam.
Features:
The following link will take you to a recording discussing the features available in Elluminate. The presentation runs about five minutes.
(Note: This recording uses the same software need to use Elluminate. If you have not verified that you have the required software selecting the link above will check for you. The software may take several minutes to load the first time you use the system.)
Try a Live Demo:
Test your system by logging onto Elluminates live demo room. (The program may take several minutes to load the first time you log onto the system.) Once logged in follow the instructions on the whiteboard to test your microphone & speaker settings.
Checking your microphone and speakers outside of Elluminate:
You can test your microphone and speakers in Elluminate by joining the Configuration Room. Or you can adjust your microphone and speakers/headphones using Windows or Mac system software.
In Windows XP select the Control Panel then "Sounds and Audio Devices Properties" . In this control panel move to the "Voice" tab and select the "Test Hardware" button and follow the instructions to test microphone recording volume and speaker/headphone volume.
Using a Mac OSX computer you open System Preferences and the "Sounds" Control Panel. Some Mac computers require an USB microphone, and a regular connection to headphones. In the "Sounds" Control Panel you can adjust the volume for input (microphones) and output (headphones or speakers).
With either type of computer when you think you are ready, return to the Elluminate support page to further test sound and microphone by joining the Configuration Room mentioned above. It is at http://www.elluminate.com/support/.
You will be provided information on how to enter into an Elluminate session.
Joining an Elluminate Live session:
Go to http://globalcampus.uiowa.edu
Select the date of your scheduled meeting.
Choose the meeting you wish to attend from the list. Participants may join a session up to 30 minutes in advance of its scheduled start time. It is highly recommended you log into the session at least 15 minuets prior to the start time to allow for software updates which may be required.

Preparing PowerPoint presentations to use in Elluminate:
You may want to share a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation during a session in Elluminate. You can import your PowerPoint slides once you are logged into the Elluminate session or using the following conversion tool you can convert your slides to the whiteboard format ahead of time. To convert your PowerPoint ahead of time you will use a conversion tool available on-line at http://www.elluminate.com/support/ppt_converter.jsp. This program will take you step-by-step through the process of converting your PowerPoint presentation to an Elluminate whiteboard.
Then when you are ready and inside the Elluminate program you can import your converted PowerPoint as a whiteboard.
