What are the dates of Summer Session 2010?
The University of Iowa offers three summer sessions.
- Three-Week Session meets May 17-June 4, 2010
- Eight-Week Session meets June 8-July 30, 2010
- Six-Week Session meets June 22-July 30, 2010
There are also classes offered which meet outside of these time frames. Please refer to ISIS for a complete listing of Summer Session 2010 course offerings.
How can I view a listing of Summer Session 2010 offerings?
Although we no longer offer a printed schedule of courses, in mid-February you may access the Summer Session 2010 course offerings online via ISIS.
What is ISIS?
ISIS stands for Iowa Student Information Services which is a web-based student records, registration, and portal system. You can search or browse the course listings without logging in. Registered students can log into ISIS to set up their UI email account, check their eligibility to register for future sessions, change their residing address, view their University bill or their grades, order an official transcript, and more. You may access the site at http://isis.uiowa.edu.
When does registration for Summer Session 2010 begin?
Currently enrolled students are expected to register at or after their assigned registration time during the scheduled Early Registration period, April 19 - 30, 2010. However, students are able to register and make schedule adjustments until the day before classes begin.
How do I register for Summer Session courses?
All students admitted to the University can register for classes on ISIS at ITCs (Instructional Technology Centers) or on any personal computer, or at the Registrar's Service Center, 17 Calvin Hall.
What if I am not currently a student at The University of Iowa?
You will need to submit the appropriate application and supporting documents. If you plan to take only a limited number of courses on campus or if you are a high school student who wishes to take courses while still enrolled in high school you will need to submit an application for Non-Degree Students. How much do Summer Session courses cost?
Many variables are taken into consideration to determine the amount of tuition and fees a student will be assessed. How much do Summer Session workshops cost?
A workshop is designated by a "WK_" as the section #. When do I pay my Summer Session tuition and fees?
Beginning February 1, 2009, The University of Iowa will no longer mail paper copies of University Bills (U-Bills) to students. Instead, students will receive email notification when their U-Bills are available for review and payment online through ISIS.Summer Session tuition and fees will be billed on June 1st and will be due on approximately the 22nd of the month. Is financial aid available during Summer Session?
Yes, financial aid is available in the summer; however, there is a separate summer application that must be completed. The application is available in the Office of Student Financial Aid or on their website www.uiowa.edu/financial-aid/apply/ when summer registration begins. You must be registered for your courses before you submit the application.Summer is the last semester in the fall/winter/spring/summer year. Therefore, some Federal Direct Loans may not be available if a student has already reached their annual maximum. Summer financial aid is usually limited to Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work Study, and Federal Direct Loans. Aid is based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the preceding academic year.
How many credits can I take in Summer Session?
You can not register for more than the maximum number of semester hours allowed by your college without approval from the dean. For the eight-week and six-week Summer Sessions combined, the maximum semester hours allowed without approval are: graduate - 8; undergraduate - 9. For the three-week Summer Session, the maximum semester hours allowed without approval for both undergraduate and graduate students is 3.
Can I transfer credits earned during Summer Session to another institution?
Please check with the school that you are currently attending since the transfer of credits is at the discretion of the receiving institution.
When are final exams?
During the Summer Session there is no designated final exam period. Final exams are scheduled before the official end of the Summer Session (5:00 p.m., July 30, 2010), either during a regular meeting time or at a time determined by the course instructor in consultation with the students in the class.
When will my grades be available?
Grades are usually available on ISIS approximately eight to ten days after the end of the term. You can log in to ISIS using your Hawk ID and Hawk ID password and view or print out a grade report for any session from Fall 2003 on. The Hawk ID is your username for most online services at UI, including ISIS. For more information about the Hawk ID, see http://hawkid.uiowa.edu/.

Is housing available during Summer Session?
Yes, housing is available for University of Iowa sponsored groups only, but there is a limited availability. Please contact University Housing regarding residence hall room availability at (319) 335-3000 or you may view their web site at http://housing.uiowa.edu/Students may also want to contact the Off-Campus Housing Service which is a free service providing listings of available housing in Iowa City and nearby communities. The University of Iowa operates the Off-Campus Housing Service to help students, faculty, and staff locate off-campus housing. They are located at the Campus Information Center on the first floor of the Iowa Memorial Union and can be reached at (319) 335-3055.
Is parking available on campus?
On campus parking is very limited. If you are registered for a summer course you can access your ISIS account and request a parking permit for the areas for which you are eligible. Any questions about the process should be directed to the UI Parking Office at 319/335-1475 or by email at parking-office@uiowa.edu.Some reserved parking areas are open to the public after 4:30 pm and there are various meters which are available throughout campus. Please be sure to read the signs posted on the meters and those posted at the parking lots. Cambus, the University's mass transit system, offers on-campus bus service that is available to the general public at no fare. Schedules are available from the Cambus office or on any Cambus.
