Examinations

Distance Education maintains a testing center on campus located in room 201 of the Continuing Education Facility.  The Continuing Education Facility is located on the second floor of the U.S. Bank building in downtown Iowa City at the corner of Dubuque and Washington Streets.
If you are a student residing in or near Iowa City, you must schedule tests at this location. Regular testing times include evening hours. There is no charge for use of the testing center. You must schedule your exam at least two business days in advance.

Students who live outside the Iowa City area may complete exams under the supervision of approved proctors anyplace in the world where a postal service is available. Distance education students living outside the Iowa City area may also schedule exams with approved proctors.  Exams must be supervised by an appropriate proctor; and you are responsible for any fees that the proctor may charge for their services.   Appropriate proctors include:

Exams cannot be sent to or written at private residences.   To protect the integrity of our examination monitoring system, we reserve the right to reject any proposed exam proctor or any previously approved proctor.  To avoid the appearance of impropriety, no relative, work supervisor, teacher, faculty member, tutor, or immediate employer (regardless of academic qualifications) may proctor an exam.  Contact de-exams@uiowa.edu  about the acceptability of a proctor or need assistance identifying a suitable proctor.

If you are taking exams at a distance, we will send all exams by first-class mail.  Upon your special request and at your expense, we will send exams by an expedited mail service. Exams are returned to our office by postpaid first-class mail unless you make an arrangement to provide your proctor with a prepaid expedited mail envelope. If you do so, address the envelope to the Division of Continuing Education, Attn: Testing Center, 30 S. Dubuque St., 2nd Floor, Iowa City IA 52240.
