Guided Independent Study (GIS) Course Information

Guided Independent Study (GIS) offers students living anywhere the opportunity to earn undergraduate or graduate credit through independent, self-paced learning and personalized instruction—all without the need to be on campus.

The flexibility of GIS appeals to adult, part-time students whose job or family responsibilities may preclude attending class on campus. Students may enroll in GIS courses without being admitted to The University of Iowa. Out-of-state tuition increases do not apply. Guided Independent Study courses are Web-based and self-paced. Some courses may be requested in print-based format.

PLEASE NOTE:  Effective June 15, 2007, The Guided Independent Study program is in the process of changing from its previously offered non-semester based format to semester based Independent Study courses only.

SEMESTER BASED GIS

·       Effective Fall 2007 Semester:  All registrations after June 15 will be in the semester-based format.
Semester-based GIS courses are identifiable with sections EXX, EXY, and EXZ. Students will have two semesters to complete their coursework

NON-SEMESTER BASED GIS

·       Effective June 15, 2007:  GIS courses are no longer offered in non-session-based format. 
Non-session-based GIS courses are identifiable with sections GW* (GW1, GW2, etc.) Students who register in GW* sections prior to June 15, 2007 will have the standard nine-month enrollment period.   (See Changes in Guided Independent Study Courses for information about program changes taking place after June 15, 2007.)
