BAS Core Requirements
The following information pertains only to students enrolled in The University of Iowa's Bachelor of Applied Studies (BAS) external degree program.
- The courses listed below have been approved to fulfill one or more Core Requirement area for the Bachelor of Applied Studies degree.
- If not completed prior to admission, the following minimum Core Requirements must be completed by graduation.
- Those courses which may also be counted toward fulfillment of upper-level course requirements are designated by (UL).
- While most of the courses listed below are available by Guided Independent Study, some of them are offered as semester-based extension courses through Distance Education. On-campus course work, regular daytime or Saturday & Evening classes, also may be used to satisfy these Core Requirements. For additional course options see ISIS at http://isis.uiowa.edu/courses.
Cultural Diversity - 3 s.h. of credit are required in this area.
Quantitative or Formal Reasoning - 3 s.h. of credit are required in this area.
Rhetoric - 4-8 s.h. of credit are required in this area-includes equivalent of 2 composition courses and 1 speech course.

- 010:003 Accelerated Rhetoric
Accelerated Rhetoric fulfills the Core Requirement in Rhetoric for University of Iowa Bachelor of Applied Studies students; in addition, Bachelor of Liberal Studies students, Oral Health Sciences students, and RN-BSN students may also enroll to meet program requirements. If you are a degree candidate in any other undergraduate program at The University of Iowa, you are not allowed to enroll in this independent study course. If you are not admitted to a degree program at The University of Iowa, you may enroll. However, if you are subsequently admitted to an undergraduate degree program at The University of Iowa, this independent study course will not satisfy the General Education Program requirement in Rhetoric for other degree programs than those mentioned above.
