Status, Admission, Credit, and Related Information

Admission to The University of Iowa

In most instances, registration in courses offered through Continuing Education does not require admission to The University of Iowa, nor does such registration constitute admission. Graduate and professional programs may require admission after a designated number of semester hours have been earned in non-admitted status. For information on admission to The University of Iowa or to apply for admission, contact the Office of Admissions, 107 Calvin Hall, The University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242 (telephone: 1-800-553-IOWA, toll-free nationwide), or access www.uiowa.edu/admissions.

Enrollment Status

Enrollment in undergraduate status requires high school completion or the equivalent.  Enrollment status in graduate or professional courses requires an earned baccalaureate degree.

If you are unsure of your enrollment status please contact the Center for Credit Programs at credit-programs@uiowa.edu. Any request for change in status must be made promptly. Requests may not be allowed after the deadline for adding courses has passed.

College Designation

Registrants not formally admitted to The University of Iowa are designated as either Undergraduate-Extension (AE) or Graduate-Extension (GE). For undergraduates, the permanent record card entry will be "Division of Continuing Education," "Undergrad non-degree student." For graduate registrants, it will be " Graduate College," "Unclassified student."

Admitted students maintain their college designation when enrolled in a distance education course. If you are formally admitted to a University of Iowa program, you are strongly urged to consult your academic adviser regarding registration.

Maximum Schedule

The maximum University registration (all courses taken on and off campus) permitted for undergraduate students is 18 semester hours during a semester, 9 semester hours during a summer term. Graduate students may register for no more than 15 semester hours during a semester, 8 semester hours during a summer term.

Academic Probation and Dismissal

All registrants are governed by the rules of the college in which they are enrolled. All problems pertaining to the administration of academic matters fall within the rules of that college, including academic probation and dismissal. Queries regarding this should be directed to the Center for Credit Programs, or to the appropriate collegiate academic programs office.

Duplication

In the undergraduate colleges, duplication occurs when you either take the same course more than once or take a course that duplicates the content of a previously completed course. Duplication is determined by the Registrar at the time of graduation analysis. Hours earned by duplication do not count toward the total number of hours required for graduation. Grades for both courses, however, are used in computing the grade-point averages.

Regression

In the undergraduate colleges, regression occurs when you take a lower-level course (which is a prerequisite) after having completed a more advanced course in the same subject. Whether regression has occurred is determined by the Registrar at the time of graduation analysis. Hours earned by regression do not count toward the total number of hours required for graduation.
