GIS Transition Begins in April
Guided Independent Study (GIS) students will notice many changes in the next few weeks. The GIS program is adopting a semester-based format much like other distance education courses. So what are the changes, and what do they mean for you?
The Overall Changes
- Students will enroll in GIS courses during on-campus registration periods
- Students will have two academic terms to complete GIS courses
- Section indicators will change from GW to EX
- The EX section indicator means the semester-based rules apply to the course registration
Choices to Make Now
Beginning April 16, you will be able to register early for all Guided Independent Study courses for the fall session just like any other distance education course. Because the changes listed above will not be fully instituted until the fall semester, if you plan to register for a GIS course during April, May, or June, you may choose to register for it in one of three formats:
- As a GIS course in the old format
- As a summer session "early adopter" course
- As early registration for the fall session in the new GIS format
The Old GIS Format
If you wish to enroll in traditional GIS courses following the nine-month rolling enrollment process, you may do so until June 15. Your course(s) will be identified with a GW section number, and you will be subject to the rules of the nine-month enrollment period.
Summer Session Early Adopter Courses
A select number of GIS courses are being offered in the new semester-based format in summer session 2007. The summer session for these courses runs from May 14 to July 27. If you enroll in an early adopter course but do not complete coursework during the session, you are assigned a grade of Incomplete and given an extended deadline of December 1, 2007 for completing coursework.
Summer Session 2007 Early Adopter Courses:
• 06E:001:EXZ Principles of Microeconomics
• 06E:002:EXZ Principles of Macroeconomics
• 06E:104:EXZ Macroeconomic Theory

• 08C:297:EXZ Fiction Writing
• 08C:298:EXZ Poetry Writing (Tools and Traditions)
Fall Session and the New GIS Format
Fall courses begin on August 27. Grades will be posted to transcripts in late December for students who finish coursework during the fall semester. April 1 is the firm deadline for all coursework. For those not included in the December grade report, grades will be posted to transcripts in May.
All GIS courses in the new system will continue to be delivered online, with an option in most courses to purchase print-based materials instead. In the new format, courses provide a recommended schedule for assignments and exams for students who wish to receive their course grades at the end of the session in which they are enrolled. However, considerable flexibility is still allowed for self-pacing of coursework over the extended two-semester enrollment period.
Summer & Fall 2007 Registration Overview
Early registration for Summer and Fall 2007 courses begins the week of April 16. All course listings may be accessed online through ISIS (Iowa Student Information Services). It is now possible to enter your own registration on ISIS for Distance Education courses and workshops.
Need help finding courses on ISIS? Please see detailed instructions at the Find a Course link from the Center for Credit Programs (CCP) Web site.
When viewing courses on ISIS, click on the course title to see a brief course description as well as restrictions, prerequisites, etc. You can review additional course details, such as textbooks and how to access your course, by following the course-specific link in each semester-based distance education ISIS course description.
On-Campus Semester-Based Courses
Summer and fall session courses are available for viewing on ISIS. If you wish to register for session-based on-campus courses through ISIS you must have two registration numbers, one for summer and one for fall. Your advisor will have your registration numbers approximately two weeks prior to early registration. Contact Nancy Romine, your BAS academic counselor, to discuss your plan of study and obtain your numbers. Remember, registration numbers change each semester, so those assigned for spring are no longer valid.
If you have never registered for an on-campus course or if you did not register for an on-campus course in the Spring 2007 session, you will not automatically be assigned a registration number. You must notify your advisor in advance that you want to register for summer and/or fall on-campus courses. Your advisor will request numbers for you through the Office of Admissions and will notify you when they are assigned along with your registration dates and times.
BAS students may register by telephone for Saturday & Evening courses during and after early registration. A registration number is required as verification of advisor's approval.
Distance Education (DE) Semester-Based Courses
DE summer and fall session courses were posted on ISIS in March. Under the new registration system, current students may go into ISIS, and, when eligible, register for courses. BAS admitted students may register on ISIS at or after their assigned registration times.
